Speaking of being “daring” …
I just don’t get it.
I just don’t get this fascination with … ahem … dare I say it …
“Twilight.”
I know them are fightin’ words, but, I just don’t get it.
First off, no, I haven’t read the books because (A) I don’t read fiction, and (B) it’s about a vampire.
If I’m going to fill my mind up with something, it’s going to be something that will help me better my life.
Now, let me clarify …
I’m not anti-vampire.
I mean, HELLO … I watched “The Lost Boys” about 20 times when I was a teenager. Those were some hot vampires, you know.
However, after seeing “Interview with a Vampire,” my desire to know any more about vampires diminished, due to the insane amount of blood-sucking. Oh, but wait … that’s what vampires do. I just didn’t expect it to be so gory, even though it was blood-sucking. Silly Me.
And you know, these vampires will suck your blood no matter what. Yeah, they can say they love you, whatever. When night comes and you’re around with blood running through your veins, they’re gonna try to suck your blood. Sorry to burst your bubble, but no vampire can withstand the blood sucking no matter how charming and beautiful a woman may be or their desire to love them. Ain’t gonna happen.
With all that said…
Please, oh please, tell me … what is the deal with “Twilight” and grown women’s fascination with it?
Please don’t hate me for my frankness and non-understanding.
I’ve never heard of Twilight and have no clue what you are talking about, but I can tell you that I could not sit through Lost Boys then or now. Blood-sucking anything creeps me out…especially those real-life vampires, mosquitos.
I felt the same way until I picked up the first book. I couldn’t put them down! I read all four in less than 10 days. I only started reading because my oldest daughter was reading them and ’cause I’m a nosey Mom like that, I had to make sure it was okay. It’s not about blood and gore, it’s a really good love story.
Ummm…I started reading them when my 12yo daughter wanted to read them. I wanted to make sure the content was “safe”. Trust me, vampires is not my genre. But, oh my word, they are romantic. It really is a love story!
Don’t worry, I don’t get it either.
And Robert Pattison? Totally not attractive, especially for a teen icon.
(OK that just made me sound like a child predator.)
You know what I mean. Our teen studs were Leo and Johnny Depp. This guy just doesn’t seem to fall into that category.
You can think what you want, it’s good to stand on your own thoughts. I admire that in you Belle. Good for you for asking and putting it out there. Since you haven’t read the books, I’ll tell you there is NO gore. IT’s a love story, forbidden love. The Cullen are vegitarian vampires, they prey on animals. They don’t like being vampires so they do their best to go againest their “needs”. I love books that grab me and pull me into the story. Where I feel connected to the charaters. These books did that. For me it’s a STORY. or dream, where you may not like the players or the place but you dream it anyway. And then you find that it wasn’t what you thought at all. Harry Potter did that for me as well. Fiction helps me see beyond the world. It helps be visulize things from the bible too. I can’t imagine what Jesus will look like or what it will feel like to be in his presence, but I KNOW it will be amazing, cause I’ve read it. But if I didn’t have books that gave me an imagination, then it would be HARD for me to be sure…does that make ANY sense.
You don’t have to like the books, or read them…I still think your awesome. Just don’t think I’m weird cause I do like them ok?
I also refuse to read the Twilight series even though several of my friends and my younger sister is obsessed with it. Not into vampires either, I have enough nightmares on my own…

Ha! Funny. Go read Sarah’s post today – it’s about Twilight. I haven’t read it yet – but I want to. I’m not sure when I’ll get to it though – it’s 4 books long – and I already have a stack of books waiting to be read… I’ll probably just go see the movie. 🙂
I don’t like vampires either and I was very iffy about this series. My oldest daughter read all 4 and loved them. I haven’t read them yet, but I took both my girls to see the movie last week. The movie was pretty good and so now after I finish the book I’m already reading I plan to read at least the first Twilight book. If you want, I posted a blog about this at my site last night.
I totally get you on this. . . .never heard of it until a few weeks ago, and then I thought it was some sort of pop group! Boy was I wrong and I totally am not into Vamps either. UGH! I just don’t understand how anyone could possibly think they could be romantic but I haven’t read the book either, and not sure I will, just don’t have the time for pleasureable reading right now.
And another thing, I appreciate your honesty, its refreshing.
I’m with you sister! I had a conversationn with a woman who was around 50 yrs old. She was trying to convince me to read the books and won’t let it go. I kept telling her it didn’t matter. I was not going to spend my time or money on a book about vampires. period. No mater how it hooked you or touched you or whatever. She looked at me like I was from outer space. I finally had to tell her that I had to go somewhere. I think she was about to sit on me and force me to read the first chapter.
I don’t get it either. I wrote about a book series I love that I will post tomorrow. The Christmas Hope Series by Donna VanLiere. Wonderful. Christian Fiction.

I have read the Twilight series and I just think that it is okay. I read a lot and I mean a lot. Probably 3-4 books every 7-10 days. And I read lots of different stuff. I’m not really into the love story or the vampire. But that being said. I still just think they are okay. They have been compared to the Harry Potter series and they are no where near it. Can’t touch it. On the other hand, if you like something Harry-ish, try the Fablehaven series. Excellent and much better than Twilight.
I haven’t felt too drawn to reading that series, either. Hard to imagine it being described as “romantic.” Is it science-fiction?

Here’s the thing…I almost laugh when people say it’s a book about vampires. It actually really isn’t. In fact, I haven’t watched Lost Boys or Interview with a Vampire just because I don’t like that stuff. Period. Trust me, this book is not “about” vampires. Yes, it has vampires in it but they are NOT the vampires you are used to. If you like a love story, you WILL like these books. I cried like a baby at the end of the series just because the love story was so beautiful.
I’m fine with people hating on the books if they’ve read it and still don’t get it and I’m not saying you (or even other commenters) are hating on the book…just some people are. All I can say is you have to read the book. You can get through Twilight in 2 days or less and then you’ll see 🙂
And then every other post is going to be about Twilight like the rest of us 🙂
Yes, love your honesty and I agree…not into the whole vampire love story kinda thing. There are sooo many other good books out there to read without involving, well, um, vampires : ) I have a 13 yr old daughter who loves fiction, but not interested in this. Most of her friends read it, cause well, they say…”it’s popular to read Twilight.” Grief…glad my girl is her own person.

When I was little I used to pull the covers up really high under my chin because that was the sure fire way to keep the vampires away. Much better than dumb old garlic. On top of that my parents only bought the powder and that would have been hard to explain.
Women like “bad guys” I guess that’s why they like hot vampires? I haven’t seen it or any other vampire movie since the age of ten probably. I’m more into the War of the Worlds/ aliens taking over the earth scenarios personally *wink* But good luck on your quest for the crux of this issue!
I read the first two books. I heard SO much about them that I had to give them a chance. I felt a little let down. Not enough action. Maybe I was just expecting too much. I’ll probably finish reading the series. At this point, I feel like I need to finish, but I read non-fiction all the time, so no biggie.
I was with you until I read them. My sister likes all of those sci-fi type books and I so don’t. I’m not into fairies, witches or vampires…until I finally broke down and read Twilight. It’s really pretty good. You should try it – but you need to know you’ll get sucked in just like the rest of us did! 🙂
I’m with you! I am a huge fiction reader but this is one that I have no desire to even pick up. I had not heard of it until it came out at the movies. I’ll pass and grab something that will not cause me nightmares!
Honesty is always refreshing.
I love to read fiction, but I am very picky what I read. I don’t like to read books that stress me out or leave me in a funk. I only read the Twilight books after a sweet friend that I trust assured me that I would like them. And then I picked the first one up with caution.
I totally agree with a few of your previous commenters…they are not really vampire books. It is a sweet love story. Very clean. I know that it sounds ridiculous to say that they are not “vampire books”, but they are really not vampire books. I even recommended them to my 86 year old grandmother.
I have a 11 year old asking to read the first book. I am still saying no. Just because all her friends are reading it is no reason to let her read it. Matter of fact, its pretty much a big part of my motivation to not let her read it. My mom tried to be pretty open minded about my reading material. I read things some other christians would be like “no way she let you read that!” but my reservation with this series has less to do with vampires and gore and more with trying to keep my daughter from being inundated with the whole “romance” thing as long as i can…not sheltering her…just dont think she needs all that right now. It will be shoved down her throat soon enough….
I don’t get it either, my 22 year old daughter really liked it but I’d rather watch something like the Notebook… But then again one of my favorite movies is Lonesome Dove so what do I know… lol
My daughter “challenged” me to read the books and not like them. I was DETERMINED to not like them. I thought they were great and I’m not a vampire person either. Great love story.
OK, I’m not sure what the deal is either but the marketing has me wanting to see the movie. Now everyone here makes me want to read them!

p.s. I will add 2 tiny things…these books are not about vampires…it’s a LOVE STORY, plain and simple. It’s fantasy, it’s not real life…so you know, Wizard of Oz, Barbie dolls, Hannah Montanna and that type stuff? No difference. The Lost Boys (which I love, admittedly) is filth compared to Twilight. Just sayin’.

The Twilight peeps…yeah, they are big fans of True Love Waits. As in–NO SEX ‘TIL MARRIAGE. Amen and the end.

Ok, so would you read them for me? I really don’t want to read them b/c I know I won’t stop if they aren’t uplifting. .I LOVE fiction and can get pulled into a story so I’m VERY careful about what I start. . .the vampire and comparison to Harry Potter totally turn me off. . .hate me if you want but I am SO not into “magic” and evil spirits being cool like in Harry. But, today I heard that there are a lot of Christian artists on the Twilight soundtrack b/c of their firm stand on abstinence that runs through the movie. . .
All that leads me to, I trust you (from all that I know so far!) so would you read just a teeny bit and tell us how it stands biblically?

I think women in our society are starved for real gentlmen, for chivalry, for devotion. Edward Cullen seems to embody that in a character.
Edward Cullen is NO horndog.
But if you don’t get into it you just don’t. No big deal either way.
And yeah, Lost Boys was THE movie back in the day.
