Yesterday, La Petite Belle and I had “the talk” …. again.
The first time came almost 2 years ago. We only handed out information that was necessary for her age at that time. There’s only so much a child can handle at a young age.
But, apparently, La Petite Belle informed me that she already knew about the “‘s’ word,” following a commercial currently running on TV, saying straight-up, “Talk to your kids about sex …” (which came on 3 times while we were watching a movie on ABC Family … hmph). That’s how the conversation started.
After she informed me that she already knew all about the subject, I asked her to tell me what sex was.
She definitely got some misinformation from someone. “Peanuts” have a whole new meaning in our house.
I quickly told her that we needed to get all this information straight and we headed upstairs to get the book I had shared with her 2 years ago. This book is for all ages and has bold print for the younger kids and fine print for the older ones. We read the fine print (all the technicalities and terms) and discussed that God created EVERYTHING, including sex. We went into more discussion about God’s original plan for sex, and how the world and sin has distorted it … then, on to consequences of not following that original plan. Heavy stuff.
She took it all pretty well.
I’m hoping the talk was a little better than this.
She’s now decided that she will never have a baby or get married for that matter. She’s given herself 2 options: She will either live with us forever, or live by herself with a dog and just help K Belle with her babies.
I’ll be reminding her of that.
Like the commercial said, “Talk to your kids about sex.” No telling what they’ve been told. And, they’re hearing about it younger and younger.
Well done, Mama Belle!
I do not look forward to the "talk"…..and I'm glad that at this point, we only have boys, somy husband gets the privilege of sharing the talk with them.
Good for you! So important that we are the one to inform our kids about it all – no matter how uncomfortable, because they will learn about it somewhere – and then you have things like a double meaning of 'peanuts'. Haha! Good that you let her know that God created it and in it's right context, it is not a bad or shameful thing.
"Peanuts"…oh my word. That made me laugh out loud.
I'd be interested to know what book you used. Not that I have to be thinking about that right now, but I have a feeling it's going to be coming sooner than we think…
Did you get her last statement in writing?!!! 🙂
I remember these times so well….and I am glad they are over!!!
But you are right, don't wait to talk to your kids. They ARE hearing it younger and younger!
I agree! We have left NOTHING for the school systems to fill in the blank for our girls. I have been very open and honest with them on this subject. Yes, it can be embarrassing for them but they need to know things from God's perspective and not our human perspective that has it all twisted.
Is it wrong that I started nodding off during that video? The voice alone was creepy, and all that mold talk made me want to go clean out the fridge!
My Butter (6 1/5) has made such comments too, I'm never having a baby…
I think the only thing we can do is give them the correct information and our values and keep doing it, then maybe when they are 35 they actually might want to leave the house and find a mate. Or do I mean they'll be ALLOWED to leave the house and find a mate???
Oh gee! First Gardasil and now "the talk." Yikes. At least I have 8-10 more years…hopefully.
I am rethinking this whole parenthood thing. Maybe we should have just stuck with the cats…and traveled. The cats don't require much mental energy…or talks about sex.
Well, I guess I can't back out now. Better put my big girl panties on and face the parenting music.
*snicker* SIssy hasn't mentioned anything other than "mates" or "mating" when she talks about cats (she's all about the cat book series "Warriors")
My dad was telling her that he'd DVRed a nature show all about cats. She was so excited! Then while int he kitchen I though I heard the word penis. Sure enough they wqere showing an extreme up close view of the cat's nether regions in their excited state *sigh* It was too late at that point to change the channel. Then the guy said they mate up to 100 times per day. Oi vey! She never said a word to me, but I know her, she will.
