The USA Weekend magazine that was in everyone’s Sunday papers yesterday put forth the question of “How do you imagine God?”
Initially, I thought … “OK. This will be good. What a perfect article for this Christmas season!”
Then, I turned to the article.
There were lots of quotes from different people of what their ideas were. Well-known people, and some not-so-well-known.
It started out pretty good.
And, my favorite by Matthew West.
But, just as I loved the descriptions above, I didn’t care for the ones below.
What does this even mean? That God just sits up in the clouds thinking? So wrong.
Ugh.
I would never use the word “kernel” in any description of the Creator of the Universe.
So sad.
I don’t think I could ever attempt to describe God.
He has only given us a glimpse into who He is through His Word. And, as we read, we can find new aspects of His character every day.
Despite our opinions, descriptions, or imaginations, He is God and He doesn’t change.
We can think whatever we want. It doesn’t change who He is.
He is not limited to our idea of who He is.
In fact, I think He’s so much more.
Here’s one of those small glimpse:
This is how God showed his love for us: God sent his only Son into the world so we might live through him. This is the kind of love we are talking about—not that we once upon a time loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to clear away our sins and the damage they’ve done to our relationship with God. I John 4:9-11
Our God is truly an awesome God.
I did not get the USA thing in my paper, I may have to talk to my paper boy! (lol, my hubby brings home a paper after he does his route.)
People can be very creative.
I liked how the author of the Shack described God, made him more "approachable" for us humans. I think HE can be/ become anything that will get our attention, but I also think that He's like an Eclipse, you know how we are told not to look directly at it and need to view it through special glasses? I think that his Awesome-ness is too much for us to handle, even in our heavenly form I don't think we can/could handle it.
Great post!
It's such a comfort to know that no matter how great I can somehow verbalize Him… He's even more than that. đŸ™‚
I read this as well and thought about blogging about it too. It's just so sad to me. Like you said, it's a good thing God is not defined by us. And it motivates me more to share with others about who God truly is.
