It all started with one suggestion:
“We should start running together.”
That’s it.
I made the suggestion to my new friend, Laura. We had just recently met at that time (over a year ago). She was already friends with one of my good friends, Amanda. Then, Laura suggested the running idea to one of her friends, Amber, whom she became friends with through a running small group at our church.
And, that’s where it began … just four girls running together. But, on these runs we would discover so much more about each other than how fast or slow we each could run. We would begin a great friendship!
We began to train with Laura for her first half-marathon, vowing we would NOT ever run that far ourselves. We were perfectly fine with the 10K.
Then, this year, Amber and I would join Laura for our first half-marathon. And, we’re still running despite multiple injuries.
We don’t just run for health benefits. We run for relationship.
And, now, we’ve been running together for over a year, and I consider them some of my dearest friends. Amazing what can happen from one simple suggestion!
I can’t imagine having come as far as I have without them. Do you know how boring running an hour alone is? BOR. ING.
They have pushed me and encouraged me in running, as well as life stuff, and I hope I’ve done the same for them.
So, here we are again, running yet another race … The Color Run
(a fun 5K, where you run through multiple sections where people throw paint at you).
It was a blast!
And, then we got to enjoy some good old girl time in NOLA, where we ate too much and laughed even more.
I love these girls and look forward to running with them as long as I’m still able to run.
Want more friends? Just take the first step … make a suggestion … go to coffee … join a class or group. It works. It really does.
The crazy thing is that I thought I had no extra space in my life for more friends. Isn’t that insane? I was perfectly content with the good friends that I did have. And, I do have some amazing friends that I’ve had relationships with for 5, 10, 15 years … I mean A. MAZ. ING.
But, I’ve come to the realization that there is no such thing as too many friends.
Every relationship is different. We need them all! Why would we want to limit ourselves to just 1 … 2 … 3 … 4 friends, when we could have 20 … all different and unique? And, all offering so much for our lives?
How fitting that I would feel such extreme thankfulness for my friendships today on this week where we stop and thank God for all the wonderful blessings He’s given us! I am so thankful for all the awesome friendships I have and how each person has impacted my life. I am blessed!
