Tonight E.T. was on Nick at Nite. We had a family movie night with popcorn and brownies (see what follows). I have a few observations about this movie that I hadn’t seen since I myself was a child. I remember loving this movie and never having any bad thoughts or memories about it. Well, have you watched it lately?

1. First of all, HELLO … I didn’t remember this bad language being in it.
2. Don’t you think you would know it if your child was spending the night outside in the back yard waiting to see some alien?
3. Who lets their child have bags of Reese’s Pieces in their room?
4. Who lets their child stay home by him or herself while he/she is sick and then just go to work?
5. Who tells their pre-schooler to just stay home for 10 minutes while they drive to the school to pick up their other child?
6. How unobservant can you be that your child is harboring an alien in his/her room and you don’t know it?
7. I don’t care if your child was dressed as a ghost. Would you really mistake your him/her for a fat, chubby alien that grunted and wobbled? I should hope not.
8. Who lets their child go trick-or-treating unsupervised? I don’t even let my children go trick-or-treating at all, much less alone (we do the church alternative thing).
Maybe my age is showing and this world has just tainted my child-like innocence and imagination, but now this movie just seems ridiculous to me. I mean, come on.
9. What ‘s up with the astronaut suits just barging into their house? Since when? I mean, don’t you have to have a search warrant or something?
10. Oh, and the raccoon nibbling at E.T. while he laid lifeless and pale in the little creek is just grossing me out.
On a better note, I made homemade brownies tonight that were to die for. They were gone before I could take a picture.

I found this delicious recipe on this wonderful Ghirardelli Baking Chocolate container. The only thing I did differently was that I chopped up Hershey’s Bliss chocolates because I didn’t have any chocolate chips. Ya’ll! So Good! Have you had the Bliss yet? It’s my new favorite. Sorry, Dove.

Ghirardelli Award-Winning Brownies
2 eggs
3/4 c. sugar
1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
1/2 c. butter, melted
3/4 c. Ghirardelli Sweet Ground Chocolate
2/3 c. flour
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. chopped walnuts (I didn’t use because the girls don’t like nuts.)
1 c. 60% Cacao Bittersweet Chocolate Chips (or Hershey’s Bliss like me)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Using a spoon, stir eggs with sugar and vanilla; add butter. Sift ground chocolate with flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir into egg mixture; add nuts. Stir in chips. Spread into a greased 8″ or 9″ square pan. Bake 20-30 minutes. For extra chewy brownies, use 8″ pan and less baking time. For cake-like brownies, use 9″ pan and longer baking time. Cut into squares. Makes 16-20 brownies. Another thing I like to do is sift powdered sugar on top after I’ve cut them out. They’re pretty and even sweeter.
