I had lunch with a wonderful friend yesterday … one of my very best friends in the world actually. I love her.
We have really great talks.
Being with her is comfortable.
I actually could spend even more time with her than I do, but then she might consider me needy. So, I give her me in small doses.
Oh, and did I mention she’s beautiful too. I want to hate her because of it, but I just can’t.
(Yes, she will want to kill me for posting a picture of her.)
Anyhow, in our conversation yesterday, we discussed the curse on women, brought on by Adam and Eve.
But, Eve, especially.
Remember the curse that was put on her?
Let’s refresh our memory.
Genesis 3:16
(New International Version)To the woman he said,
“I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing;
with pain you will give birth to children.
Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you.”That’s how I’ve always read it.Then, my friend said she had read in a different version this:
“I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing;
with pain you will give birth to children.
Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you.”That’s how I’ve always read it.Then, my friend said she had read in a different version this:
Genesis 3:16 (New Living Translation)
Then he said to the woman,βI will sharpen the pain of your pregnancy,and in pain you will give birth. And you will desire to control your husband,but he will rule over you.β
Uh … what?
So that’s why we do the things we do. It’s all part of the curse.
Whew! One more thing we can blame on Eve.
Then, I thought I would look through just a few more versions and I came across this one from my favorite version, The Message.
Genesis 3:16
He told the Woman:
“I’ll multiply your pains in childbirth;
you’ll give birth to your babies in pain.
You’ll want to please your husband,
but he’ll lord it over you.”
Now, that sounds more like it.
Geez. Can I just get a straight answer?
Either women have a natural tendency or desire to control our husbands or please our husbands.
I think it may be a little of both.
But, there’s no doubt about the “lording over” part.
(Not from my own personal experience, of course, because you all know I’m married to the man of my dreams who can fix anything.)
Thanks, Sonia, for calling that to my attention.
ItΒ΄s a cool blog:) If you want you can visit my page too.
i want to follow you now.
As I have studied it, I have always thought it was that women would desire to lead and control, but that God put the man as head of the household.
but really…..I never try to control my husband. (hee hee)
Oh mymymy…..I think you caught all of us….which is why it's part of the curse…although that doesn't change the fact that I willfully sin, does it…..ah snap π
I was just studying the other day about my tendency to try and manipulate and puppet my husband…
…I'm really very bad π
Wow, love this post (cause it makes me think — something rare before noon, lol). How crazy is it that the translations are different like that but really could mean both?
I don't know what you're talking about. My husband and I have a perfect marriage. He's a loving leader and I am the EPITOME of the submissive wife. π
P.S. Can you tell me how to spell "hypocrite"? π
I've typed and erased three different comments on this and all I can really say is Darned Snake!
Love the Message (except for the Psalms – whaaaa?)
Here's what I think.
Not that you asked.
We manipulatively please (ahem, CONTROL) our husbands into BELIEVING they are leading.
We can't help ourselves. We want to please, but we want his terms to be our terms.
Who do you think taught Eve to seduce?
Dangitall, Eve. !@#&!*^& Thanks for nothin'!
This is just too funny! Hey, let him be the head that's okay with me. But as the mother in My Big Fat Greek Wedding said, he may be the head, but I'm the neck and I can turn the head any way I want. lol
