You probably just thought that Texas is the only place being affected by good ol’ Ike. Well, we’re not getting it so bad here in Louisiana, but enough to cause me to not get a good night’s sleep. I know. I realize people are flooding in Galveston, but people, I’m sick of the hurricanes and I really need some sleep.

We were under tornado warnings all night and let me tell you, the wind was whippin’ around pretty bad. Last night, I stopped by the grocery store just to pick up a delicious dinner of frozen pizzas and ice cream. When I came out of the store, there was a torrential downpour. Seriously. Raining sideways … the kind of rain that hurts, especially when you have no umbrella. Duh.
So, all this to say … I was really concerned about the three trees in my front yard that are right up close to my house that had already been affected by Gustav. Would they snap? Would they fall? And in which direction? One was already leaning quite a bit.
Because of this, Beau and I decided to sleep on our big air mattress at the foot of our bed because if the trees did fall, they would fall directly on top of us while we were sleeping.
First of all, let me say, air mattresses and I don’t mix. It obviously had a leak, because every two hours or so, we were having to pump it back up.
See these happy people here. This was not us last night. I’m not sure why they’re so happy about sleeping on a plastic bed filled with air.
Here’s the deal:  Beau is significantly larger than I am (yes, I asked him if I could say that, and if he would be offended). So, the physics of the whole thing was not working. The mattress would lose air. His side would sink, causing mine to rise, and consequently cause me to roll toward him. Most of the night, I was just trying to stay on my side of the mattress which was significantly higher than his. It’s like I was hanging on for dear life at the top of a cliff.
After I’d finally had enough, I got up and went to sleep with K Belle. The sound of the wind was really loud and not allowing me to sleep too soundly.
Then … surprise, surprise … here comes La Petite Belle … all three of us in K Belle’s full-sized bed. At this point, K Belle began to snore. I’m talkin’ SNORE … like a 70-year-old man snore.
I began to battle in my mind where I should go because no sleeping was gonna go on for me there. Should I just go in La Petite Belle’s twin bed? Should I try to go back on the air mattress? Where should I go?
Oh … to heck with it! I’m going back in my bed. Waving and possibly falling trees are not going to stop me from sleeping anymore. So, I went back in my nice king-sized bed, alone, and prayed that God would not allow a tree to crush me in my sleep. And, then, and only then, did I sleep.
And I slept until 9:15 this morning. Haven’t done that in a long time.
